How to Wash Pillows

While most people regularly wash their pillowcases, the pillows themselves often get neglected. Different types of pillows need different cleaning approaches - what works for down won't work for memory foam. Here's how to keep your pillows clean and fresh.

Washing Schedule

Cotton, feather, and down pillows need washing every 3-6 months. Memory foam requires monthly spot cleaning with a deep clean every 6 months. Decorative pillows can go 6-12 months between washes unless visibly soiled. Always check care labels first - some pillows are dry clean only.

Standard Pillows

For machine-washable pillows (cotton, down, and synthetic fills), wash two at a time to balance the load. Use cold water and a gentle cycle with mild detergent. Add a half cup of white vinegar to eliminate odors and bacteria. Run an extra rinse cycle to remove all soap residue. Dry on low heat with dryer balls to prevent clumping and restore fluffiness.

Memory Foam Pillows

Never machine wash memory foam. Instead, vacuum both sides thoroughly, then spot clean stains with a mild detergent solution. Don't saturate the foam - use as little water as possible. Press gently with clean towels to absorb moisture, then air dry completely. Memory foam can take up to 24 hours to dry fully.

Maintenance Tips

Use pillow protectors under your pillowcases for an extra barrier against sweat and oils. Fluff pillows daily to maintain their shape. For quick freshening between washes, air pillows outside on a sunny day or sprinkle with baking soda, let sit for an hour, then vacuum thoroughly. Replace pillows every 1-2 years, or sooner if they've lost their shape or support.
